New Publication in the European Accounting Review
In a publication in the current issue of the European Accounting Review, Matthias Sohn, together with Miriam Maske of the Bundeswehr University Munich, demonstrates the role narcissism plays in subjective performance assessments in companies.
The results of the experimental study, titled "Do Birds of a Feather Flock Together? The Joint Effects of Manager and Subordinate Narcissism on Performance Evaluation," show that supervisors rate narcissistic employees less positively than non-narcissistic employees. The results further demonstrate that this effect is mediated by supervisors' weaker feelings of psychological closeness to narcissistic employees. However, supervisors with high narcissism demonstrate a stronger closeness to narcissistic employees and rate them more positively than non-narcissistic supervisors. The study demonstrates the importance of understanding the role personality traits play in incentive systems.
